2022 Winner Name :
Lee Cronin
2022 Winner Address :
PO Box 166, Lincolnville, ME 04849
2022 Winner Achievements :
Lee Cronin’s deep roots in Lincolnville span over five decades, beginning when she spent many months here as a youngster with her extended family, including her grandparents, aunt, and uncle, Dr. Frank Kibbe, who was a beloved local pediatrician. It was Lee’s grandfather, Edwin Kibbe, who found and donated the War of 1812 cannon that stands today at our beach.

Her love for this community grew over the years. During college, she introduced her future husband, Brian, to Lincolnville and he, too, was smitten. Over the next 30 years, her three daughters, their spouses and children also became deeply connected to our community. Lee and Brian bought land and later built a home, ultimately retiring here over 20 years ago.

Over her many years in Lincolnville, Lee has formed lasting friendships with both permanent and seasonal residents, establishing a legacy of generosity and dedication to our town. Her enthusiasm and boundless energy draw and retain a lasting, ever-growing group of volunteers that help carry out numerous projects. This has resulted in visible and significant contributions to this community and generated infinite pride and good will.

As a teacher, Lee became involved early on with the Lincolnville Improvement Association’s scholarship program which has provided tuition and expense benefits to over 50 college-bound Lincolnville students since its inception.

Lee is the face and driving force of the beloved Blueberry Wing Ding, a LIA-sponsored benefit breakfast that funds the scholarships. This event, held every August for 19 years, is a summer highlight for both locals and visitors. Volunteers cook and serve a blueberry pancake breakfast alongside bake sale and white elephant tables. Local merchants from the Town and the Beach donate goods and services for a raffle held at the breakfast. The Wing Ding has proven and continues to be a widely successful fundraiser. Since 2001, over 30 scholarships have been awarded in the amount of $34,350, benefitting Lincolnville students.

Her dedication to our community’s youth continues with her work for the Lincolnville Women’s Club, of which Lee has long been an active member, helping raise annual scholarship monies for local deserving students through yard sales and other activities.

With an eye on beautification, Lee has been the driving force in creating and maintaining the stunning flowers and plantings along Atlantic Highway each summer for the past ten years. She organized and planted numerous garden areas, many at her own personal expense, around the business area of the beach where locals and visitors alike to take photos. Lee recruits and organizes volunteers to plant and care for specific gardens, barrel planters and other area each year. Of special attraction is her petunia boat, where hardly a day goes by without photos being taken by those drawn to this lovely and unique garden in a boat. This past year she was inspired to add a memorial garden in remembrance of local Covid victims in front of the post office where she plants flowers every year.

Lee is also quietly involved in other important activities in the community. She and her husband, Brian, are currently leading the capital campaign to restore and renovate the Lincolnville Historical Society’s Beach Schoolhouse building. They coordinated a direct mail campaign that, when combined with other fundraising efforts including membership drives and grab-and-go meals, has contributed $61,088 to the project to date. Lee is determined to help ensure that our Town’s historical records and artifacts are maintained safely for generations to come.

When help is needed throughout the year, you’ll find Lee is one of the first to volunteer. She is an annual volunteer at the UCC Strawberry Festival, and many other activities to support the Town of Lincolnville. She gives as much help as she receives in her efforts to boost the town.

Timelines Community Inc/ The Farwell Project
2022 Winner Address :
PO Box 11, Thorndike, ME 04986
2022 Winner Achievements :
The Timelines Community Inc is a group that has bought to renovate the old OJ Farwell & Sons store. It was a mill built in 1873, a feed and grain mill and hardware store to accommodate the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, providing access to northern agricultural products for the mid-coast region. Thorndike was a railroad hub, and the activity supported several other businesses; lumber and grain mills, a department store, an automobile dealership and an inn. Farwell’s closed in 1961 when the last of the sons retired. The train then ceased to run, and the streets became quiet in the village. This group is looking to create a Storytelling Museum and Store that encompasses the general store, mill, apothecary, and the collections of artifacts we unearth in our work. They are documenting their work as they go, to create films and stories about the process. They are also attempting to learn as much as possible about the history of the buildings, former businesses and Farwell family to integrate into our work. They are working on creating workshops to teach native and European hand skills that are basic to our region and communities. These skills will include woodworking, paper making, letterpress printing, leather work, canoe building, metal smithing, fiber arts, instrument building, music making and pottery. A primary goal is to include local communities in our work as much as possible, to impart the skills and produce items to be sold in our Museum Store.

Patrick A. Briggs
2022 Winner Address :
16 Elizabethan Drive, Kennebunkport, ME 04046
2022 Winner Achievements :
Patrick A. Briggs has served as a Selectman for the Town of Kennebunkport for nine years, including one year as Chair. He has demonstrated time and time again that he is a fair and equitable representative for our Town.

Pat is a retired U.S. Air Force B-52 pilot and served in the Pentagon for five years. He established and ran a Washington office for an aerospace company before retiring to Kennebunkport.

Pat saw the need and lead the charge to bring affordable housing to our community. Once the non-profit Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust was formed, Pat stepped up as President. He and the other members of KHHT worked diligently with Town staff, local businesses, contractors, and the full Board of Selectmen to bring this project to fruition. After applying and receiving grant money, in addition to organizing several fundraisers, site development was underway. The first subdivision, comprised of six homes, was named Heritage Woods. One of the streets was named Briggs Way after, none other than, Patrick A. Briggs! There were many challenges along the way, but Pat Briggs and the KHHT worked tirelessly to overcome each one. After meeting the first goal of six affordable homes, the KHHT is now looking forward to potential new sites for expansion of the project. Pat Briggs is, again, leading the Trust in the challenge of creating additional affordable homes in our community.

Community involvement is a way of life for Pat. He served on the board of the River Tree Center for the Arts, a local non-profit center for the arts. He also co-founded and served as a director for the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Association of Southern Maine for the Dioceses of Portland.

Kennebunkport is fortunate to have such a dedicated leader in Pat Briggs.

Phil Russell
2022 Winner Address :
271 Head Tide Road, Whitefield, Maine 04353
2022 Winner Achievements :
Phil became involved with Whitefield Cemetery's maintenance around 1962. He began by digging graves for Harold Jewett, a Kings Mills resident who lived in Ann Niles’ current house on the Head Tide Road. Phil did the digging by hand and received a whopping fifteen dollars.

Harold was the Sextant, essentially the person whom families contacted to purchase a plot of land in the cemetery.

Early one spring while digging a grave, Phil was asked if he would attend the upcoming annual cemetery meeting to be held in the Kings Mills Union Hall. Not suspecting anything, he agreed, and while at the meeting, he was voted in as the new Sextant. "Odd how some things never change," one might say. Being asked to attend a Whitefield meeting of any sort can mean your future is changing direction. Many citizens can attest to that. His did.

Now sixty years later, things are changing again. We have been most fortunate to have Phil act as our Sextant for as long as he has. Little did the Cemetery Committee realize what a gem they had in his selection. He demanded that there be five record books kept in different homes; updated every year from his notes. Plot purchases, family names, dates of deaths and ages to the extent possible. Few towns keep such accurate records. Anyone could ask Phil Russell to be their personal unpaid Cemetery guide. He always obliged. Along the walk, visitors would hear stories of their kin and of those on both sides of the family as well, just because he liked to weave a story around the people who made Whitefield what it is.

All Whitefield folks should be thankful for his work and commitment. Not everyone who is asked to just “attend a meeting” ultimately makes a commitment as long as he has.

He's not going anywhere soon (just retiring from his 60 years as Sextant), so be sure to thank him should you find him at senior coffee or helping out in the cemetery

Though they are a team you rarely see them together as they are generally working on separate projects throughout town. They run a business that has them doing many different jobs from carpentry, plowing, house/animal sitting to custodial. Other than the business, they also help their neighbors when they get ‘in trouble’. For instance, helping someone’s son get his car out of a ditch when his GPS took him off road; herding escaped animals back to their pen, and helping with ‘little things’ for a sick neighbor. Both have been on the Recreation Committee, he still is. They have a great sense of humor and are fun to speak with. The Unsung Hero Award goes to Angela Stevens and Travis Perez. Thank you Angela and Travis.

FFMHS JMG
2022 Winner Address :
28 High School Drive A, Fort Fairfield, ME 04742
2022 Winner Achievements :
Fort Fairfield High School’s JMG program began the 2018-2019 school year, under the direction
of JMG Specialist and Fort Fairfield native, Kim McCrea Dorsey. The program has expanded
from 42 students the first year to over 60 students enrolled the 2021-2022 school year.
Curriculum for this program focuses on leadership and communication skills, career exploration
and readiness, team-building, job attainment, financial literacy, and service to their community.
Students are afforded opportunities in which they can apply the skills learned in class to
community projects and student-led events. There is a heavy emphasis on partnering with
community organizations and business leaders to expose students to career options and
develop Maine’s future workforce.
Through volunteerism and interactions with guest speakers, students are able to cultivate their
professional network and give back to their community. Over the years students have been
involved in the following service projects:
● JMG Food and Mitten Drive to resupply the MSAD 20 food pantry and provide winter
clothing to elementary students in need.
● Annual Spring and Fall Clean-up Days: each spring and fall, students spend a day
helping the custodial staff clean up the school grounds including raking leaves, trimming
shrubs, planting gardens, painting the trim on the MHS, mulching and pruning trees at
the ES, etc.
● Memorial Day Flags-each year JMG students assist FF VFW and American Legion
veterans in placing flags at Riverside Cemetery on the graves of fallen veterans for
Memorial Day.
● 8th Grade Step-Up Week Ambassadors-JMG students served as HS ambassadors for
8th graders participating in their high school step-up day, ensuring that they felt
welcomed, knew where they were going, and were there to answer any questions or
offer guidance for the incoming freshman class.
● Childcare for Parent-Teacher Conferences- student volunteers provided childcare for
families of young children so parents could attend parent-teacher conferences at the
Elementary School.
● CACC Haunted Woods Walk- FFHS JMG students volunteered as scene actors and
laborers for the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce Annual Haunted Woods Walk.
● JMG Fundraisers-FFHS JMG students conduct various fundraising events throughout
the year to raise money for educational field trips, student events, and donations to
community causes (e.g. $200 donation to the Turcotte Family following their devastating
house fire),
● Teacher Appreciation Week: JMG students organize activities to thank teachers at
FFHS for their efforts during the Annual Teacher Appreciation week.
● St. Appolonia Festival of Trees-Students donated a tree and items in the annual
Festival of Trees event
● Partner with FFHS NHS Chapter Events: JMG students partner with the FFHS
National Honor Society to provide student volunteers for the following events: Fall Fun
Fest, Holiday Light Display
Each JMG student is encouraged to complete a minimum of 10 community service hours
with many going above and beyond. To date, JMG students have accumulated over
1,000 hours of service to their community and counting!
Looking toward the future, my goals as the JMG Specialist are to continue to partner with
local businesses and organizations to provide engaging and relevant learning opportunities for
students to better prepare them for the workforce. As things continue to approach normalcy, my
hope is that we will be able to participate in more community service activities, tour businesses,
and interact with local employers outside of the classroom.
JMG is the only nonprofit in Maine offering a continuum of support to help students transition
from middle school through high school graduation, onto post-secondary education through
degree attainment and connections to successful career pathways.

Paul Bryant
2022 Winner Address :

2022 Winner Achievements :
A true Newcastle resident; born and raised. A deep-rooted family history since the 1700' s, the Bryant family roots of shipbuilders began on the Damariscotta River waterfront. Paul's father, Creston Bryant, built wooden sailboats and skiffs at the family shipyard known as Riverside Boat Co. located on Liberty St. here in Newcastle. This is where Paul worked alongside his dad after he graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1961 and until his father's death in 1971, at which time Paul took over the business and carrying on the Bryant legacy of wooden boat building. Paul currently works alongside his son Nat, a sixth-generation boat builder and Paul's wife Linda, who herself is a crafted boat painter.
Paul has given his time as Newcastle's Harbormaster for 50 years, during the early 2000's he also took on the role as Damariscotta's Harbormaster. For his time as the twin town's Harbormaster, he refused any pay, stating that he grew up here and felt an obligation rather than require receiving payment. He was Fire Chief of Newcastle for 15 years, he's stated, "that was due to some kids and a grass fire that got away from them, they needed some help!" He was then talked into the role as Chief!!
If you've ever had the good fortune to speak with Paul, his pride of family, his love of boats and boat building, the river, and the community in which he lives shows through in his eyes and his signature ear to ear smile.
Both towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle have been fortunate to have had such a committed and conscientious man not only to care for our river waterway, but also as a life-long resident of our town. Thank you, Paul, for your 50 years of service to our town, to the Town of Damariscotta and the river that you love so dearly.

Board of Directors of the Patten Veteran's Memorial Library was nominated
by Patten Planning Board.

In October 2020 the historic library building was deemed out of compliance
with structural codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act, prompting the
Town Government to close the structure. Recognizing that it would be some
time before needed repairs and alterations could be made to the library
building, and that maintenance of the lending library and progress in
programming were vital to the future of the library and the community, the
volunteer Library Board negotiated use of temporary space wherein to
continue services, while seeking grant assistance to create a new building.
Further, they moved over 5,000 volumes out of the old building. By
collaboration with other area libraries and a greater understanding of the
role of a community library in the twenty-first century for users of all
ages, the Board continues to demonstrate the spirit of perseverance and
progress that warrants this recognition."

2022 Winner Achievements :
The Town of Stockton Springs is proud to present the local Spirit of America Award to Kristina Braga and Katie Perkins, and to all the members of the Girl Scout Troop 2908, the Girl Scouts of Stockton Springs past and present. The reason is said best by one of the girls who has benefitted from the program:
“Hello, my name is Emma, and I’m an Ambassador in Girl Scout Troop 2908. I’ve been one of Kris and Katie’s Girl Scouts for 12 years now. Over those 12 years, I’ve grown tremendously in terms of my confidence, my leadership skills, and my understanding of the world around me, and Kris and Katie have played a great role in my development as a young woman. They’ve guided me on how to be involved in my community by using my voice and taking action while also listening to those around me and making sure that everyone is involved and included.
I’m not the only person Kris and Katie have helped become leaders in their community. Since starting their Girl Scout troop, they have touched the lives of so many young girls and have taught them how they can be involved in their community and make a difference in other people’s lives. Many of us have been part of the troop since kindergarten, and today we now know how to be active citizens and leaders in our community, from Stockton Springs to future communities we may be a part of. Kris and Katie have helped Stockton become a place where people feel welcomed and are celebrated for their victories, and that in itself is something spectacular.
I know I speak for every Girl Scout when I say that Kris and Katie have been some of our biggest supporters since we met them 13 years ago, and we wouldn’t be who we are today without them. We can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for us for all these years. We love you.”

Please accept the following names for the 2022 Spirit of America Award.
On behalf of the Waterboro Fire Department and the Town of Waterboro we would like to nominate a father, son combination for their continuous team work and years of service in providing public safety for our community.
Duane O. McCoy began his volunteer career of service to the community in June of 1972. Duane held the positions of Fire Fighter, Safety Officer and Captain during his tenor with the Waterboro Fire Department. Duane’s hard work, dedication and strong work ethic along with personal integrity made him an asset to the Waterboro Fire Department and the Town of Waterboro community.
In October of 1992 Duane’s son Nathan McCoy joined the Waterboro Fire Department as a junior alongside his father. Nathan was also dedicated to the fire service. As a junior Nathan would listen to the scanner and once the tone went off you would see Nathan hop on his bike and head for the fire station for the “the big one”.
Nathan, later in years became very involved in the department trainings and fire prevention, as he loved
Teaching and instructing others the skills of firefighting. Nathan also held the rank of Captain.
Both Nathan and Duane were very active in the community, particularly when it came to the “Bean Suppers”, held monthly at the fire barn.

2022 Winner Achievements :
Roger came to the Planning Board in 1989, and by 1991 was elected Chairman. Roger has remained in that position as a steady spokesperson, always remaining calm no matter what the situation before the board. There has been a lot of excitement along the way with applications that have made the townspeople come out either for or against what was being proposed, and even when the board had to meet at the Shapleigh School due to the size of the crowd over the possibility of Poland Springs coming in, Roger never wavered in his recitation of what was in the Town’s Ordinance and how the board had to review what was before them, basing any decision on the ordinance, not the ‘emotions’ involved. As Chairman, Roger seldom missed a meeting, even while working long hours at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The members know they can count on him to help make decisions based on what the Town and State mandates and not what he personally may think of the project. He has been dedicated to the wellbeing of the town, as a ‘volunteer’, for longer than most, and the Town of Shapleigh is very lucky to have him as a citizen, as his integrity and dedication is truly something to be valued. We also need to thank his wife, Denise, and his family for their support of Roger in his position with the Planning Board. Often meetings are long, which meant when he was working a full time job, his family on Planning Board evenings did not get to spend time with Roger, so their sacrifice and support is very much appreciated!
