Raye Anne DeSoto
2022 Winner Address :
35 Farm Family Lane, Gardiner, Maine
2022 Winner Achievements :
Raye Anne is a teacher at Gardiner Area High School. She understands that teaching goes well beyond the four walls of the classroom. In recent years, she established an Interact Club for students who are interested in the characteristics that Rotary embodies. The Interact Club continues to grow in membership and currently has more members than its parent club Gardiner Rotary #6301.
Interact students, under her guidance are very involved in any community projects that Rotary is taking part in. She has instilled in the group that this is their community and their actions today will have a lasting impact locally for years to come.
As a teacher in this community, Raye Anne knows how vulnerable out youth are and it has been a dream for years to have a food pantry at the school. What started as a “snack drawer” quickly blossomed into a food pantry that not only feeds the students but their families as well. Raye Anne and the Interact Students box up snacks and deliver to all the local elementary schools. Her classroom has a kitchen set up and students can make meals for themselves.
Prior to Covid there was also a clothing section of the pantry as well as hygiene products. Raye Anne knew that many students at the high school were unable to participate in gym class as they did not have the appropriate footwear and partnered with Rotary in writing a grant for sneakers and boots. Through that grant Rotary was able to provide over 150 pairs of sneakers/boots to the students at the high school.
Most of this is done on her own time, long after the school day ends. She is a true mentor to her students as well as most of us who know her. She leads by example and truly does not “leave any student behind”. She is tenacious but kind. She is tough on students who need it but also the first to sing their praise. She is fostering the future of Gardiner Rotary in these young adults and she is so deserving of this recognition. She is the “Spirit of Gardiner”.

Northport Broadband Internet Committee
2022 Winner Address :
16 Beech Hill Road, Northport, ME 04849
2022 Winner Achievements :
The Northport Broadband Internet Committee (NBIC) has worked tirelessly and with extraordinary dedication since forming in early February 2021 and its members truly demonstrate the "Spirit of America."
The inadequacy of internet access in Northport – indeed, in many cases, its total absence – was made abundantly clear in 2020 when the pandemic forced people into their homes for working and learning remotely. The Select Board recognized that it was impractical and prohibitively expensive for individuals to secure high-speed internet on their own and asked for volunteers to form a broadband committee to try to bring high-speed internet to every home in this rural community. They met for the first time in early February 2021 to begin this daunting task.
The NBIC began meeting weekly, at first remotely (made difficult by the terrible internet access even some NBIC members have), and later in-person, sometimes for more than two hours. Several members had no experience with broadband or information technology, just a desire to help the Town. And yet they have accomplished a great deal over nearly 40 meetings in the past year.
Starting from scratch, they first had to determine what resources already existed in the Town, and what resources would be necessary to bring high-speed “future-proof” internet to every home. They met with vendors and applied for grants, and even won a modest grant early on in the process. By the time of the Town Meeting in June, they had secured a vendor who promised to wire 45% of the Town’s homes with high-speed fiber optic cable.
At the same time, the NBIC also solicited proposals for a feasibility study for wiring the rest of the Town – along dirt roads, between wooded hills, and up lengthy driveways. The NBIC continued to meet weekly, discussing, debating, and reviewing the merits of the proposals that they received. They consulted experts, asked the submitters follow-up questions, and even checked references in communities that had used them for successful roll-outs of fiber based on their feasibility studies.
With the results of the feasibility study, they asked the vendor already committed to wiring nearly half the Town to finish the job, and the vendor agreed. The NBIC presented its plan to the Select Board and asked for a Special Town Meeting to commit the Town's entire ARPA funds allocation to support broadband infrastructure. On February 26, 2022, the Special Town Meeting unanimously approved that allocation, further demonstrating the NBIC's perseverance and the importance of their work.
The NBIC has been meticulous, thoughtful, careful, and always focused on delivering high-speed internet access to every home and business in Town. The NBIC’s members have given generously – beyond generously, even – of their time, attention, and energy. Since February 2021, they have held nearly eighty hours of public meetings, with untold additional hours spent outside the meetings by each member, researching and preparing for the next meeting. All of this has been done on a strictly volunteer basis.
Although it will still be a few years before Northport is fully wired, the only reason that we have gotten as far as we have so quickly is because of their tireless efforts, which have gone so far above and beyond expectations. They deserve the thanks and praise of the Town of Northport, and the Spirit of America award.

CCAT's vision is to facilitate a reduction of 50% in greenhouse gases by the Cumberland community by 2030.
We have been very pleased with our progress to date. First, using the UNH campus carbon calculator (the higher ed gold standard), we estimate the carbon footprint of Cumberland 68,000 metric tons CO2e. Over 90% of those emissions arise from the 2700 individual households in the community mostly from heating fuel and gasoline for car travel. For this estimate, we received technical help from the Greater Portland Council of Governments and Colby College. Second, we now have an operational and expanding CCAT web site. Lastly, MSAD51 has been very receptive to working with us. A major piece of their strategic plan is environmental stewardship. Also, they are mindful of their sizeable carbon footprint, which we estimate at 4,300 metric tons C2Oe in 2015 – the equivalent of 200 households. They have already taken action by converting over to natural gas for heating and implementing an efficiency program through Siemens. For FY2017, they are budgeting 1) sufficient REC’s to make all their electricity use carbon free and also 2) three level II charging stations to support use of electric vehicles. The second largest component of their carbon footprint (behind heating) is the daily commute of 400 staff and 200 high school students. Our CCAT has agreed to fund raise half the cost of the charging stations. Also, under Superintendent Jeff Porter’s able leadership, they are weaving climate change understanding into both the curriculum and student activities.
Added June 2016:
MSAD51 has recently begun planning for a Performing Arts Center and a bond referendum in November 2016. As this project could result in big increase in the carbon footprint of the campus, we are working with the Building Committee to consider designs that are carbon neutral.
Town Government has a much smaller carbon footprint consisting primarily of the fuel expended by the Police and Public Works Departments. As more fuel efficient vehicles become available, they are worked into the vehicle fleet. One major asset of the Town is close to 1000 acres of Town Forest in several locations. As the Town is committed to managing this forest sustainably, it has a natural offset to its carbon emissions. We are working with a licensed forester to quantify this offset. Lastly, the Town was moving forward to consider a solar farm on its 5 acre capped landfill; this is now on hold due to the recent LePage veto.
Our ongoing challenge will be to find ways to motivate our 2700 private households to reduce their carbon footprint. Anecdotally, there seems to be a general apathy to taking action by the general public. One first step we are taking is to offer a brief course on this subject in the Fall 2016 Adult Education program. It will teach individuals how to calculate their own carbon footprint and to develop a plan to cut it by 80% - in line with the Paris Accords. This turns out to be simpler and cheaper than most believe, thanks to emerging technologies such as air source heat pumps and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Carol Noonan and Jeff Flagg, the owners of Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, have always been grateful for the support that this community has given them and is always looking for ways to give back. When the Pandemic began and with the State under quarantine, the venue had to close its doors to concerts. With all the food that they had on hand, they decided to share it with the community and this started ‘family meals’ with them serving the elderly that were homebound and families in need. This program continues to this day.

2022 Winner Achievements :
John & Margarita Contreni are deserving of the Spirit of America Award due to their dedication and service to the Greenville community.
I first met John and Margarita in July of 2019; at that time they were working on the Canopy Project for Greenville. They spear headed this project- planting new trees in the downtown and Junction Wharf areas.
John and Margarita serve on various Boards and Committees not only within the Town of Greenville, but also throughout the State. Both of them attend and participate in our Select Board meetings as well.
In the summer months John can be found early in the morning pulling a wagon full of buckets of water for giving the town’s flowers and shrubs a watering. John has been instrumental with grant writing for our new proposed Public Safety Building. He dedicates countless hours “behind the scenes” in helping to make Greenville prosper. John is the Chairperson of the Greenville Planning Board, he is also the chair of the budget committee; this committee works with the Select Board and myself, the Town Manager on the budget for the upcoming new fiscal year.
Margarita is the President of the Moosehead Lake Economics Development Corporation, working on various projects; including the new public park near our downtown. This park has direct access to Moosehead Lake, with boat docks, allowing boaters to dock and walk to our shops and restaurants. Margarita is also writing grants for our revitalization for our public beach- Red Cross Beach. She has been dedicated to this project through not only her grant writing, but her organizational skills, keeping us on course for achieving deadlines for the grants. This project will move the public beach to a public park. She is also on a committee for helping bring workforce housing to Greenville.
Their focus has always been to promote and better not only Greenville but the Moosehead Lake Region for the people that live, work and enjoy all the area has to offer. John & Margarita volunteer not only their time but their expertise whenever called upon.

Your Title :

2022 Winner Name :
Marsha Doherty
2022 Winner Address :
PO Box 211, Corinna, ME 04928
2022 Winner Achievements :
Marsha Doherty has lived in Corinna almost 72 years. She and her husband Lionel (Danny) raised their two children, Billy and Tracy, in Corinna while she was an active part of her community. She worked at several restaurants in and out of Town, at Pittsfield Shoe, Snowflake, picking potatoes and haying for area farmers, as a Weight Watchers instructor, and as a school volunteer for ten years.
While in high school, she began her many years of PAL cheering. She went on to be the cheering coach for the Corinna Junior High Cheering team. Not only was she a Girl Scout leader, she was also a Cub Scout leader.
Marsha is a take-charge kind of person. She has been the President of many organizations, such as the Corinna Legion Auxiliary, the Nokomis All-sports Boosters, the Corinna Elementary Sports Boosters, and the Corinna Trailblazers ATV club. Marsha is a true trailblazer, being elected the first woman Selectman for the Town of Corinna.
As a school volunteer, she decorated the Corinna Elementary School for all their concerts. She would also brighten the hallways and cafeteria walls for the children to enjoy. She was a regular volunteer for the school lunch snack programs. As the Chairman of the Corinna Elementary group, she organized the building of the bleachers for the town ballfields.
Marsha is a great fundraiser organizer! She has organized fundraisers for the Corinna School defibrillator, for the Corinna Health Center, and many more organizations and projects that were grateful for her helping hands and ability to raise funds.
She obtained a grant for the Fire Department, which allowed them to purchase a Jaws of Life, a Thermal Imaging Camera, a foam machine and a gurney for the ambulance. Marsha was made an Honorary Fireman by the Fire Department for her efforts to obtain the grant contributions for the Fire Department.
Marsha was the Chairman for the Town’s 175th anniversary celebration, and for many years for the annual Corinna town celebrations. For many years, she would decorate the Town for Christmas and she still organizes an annual “Santa for Children” Christmas party.
For her unselfish dedication to volunteering in her community, Marsha has received the Citizen Legion of Honor Award, the 2020 Maine Volunteer Roll of Honor where she devoted 500 hours or more of volunteer service to the community during the past twelve months, and has been nominated for the Jefferson Award for her public service. She has set a high expectation for community service for all residents. For all this and more, we honor Marsha for her dedication and devotion to the Town of Corinna. Congratulations, Marsha!

Your Title :

2022 Winner Name :
Debbie Freeman
2022 Winner Address :
PO Box 192, East Orland, ME 04431
2022 Winner Achievements :
Debbie Freeman devotes herself to service within our community. During
spring, summer, and fall, she runs a donation barn, where she receives
donated items and then sells them for whatever donation feels right to the
person taking the item. It may seem a small thing, but her endeavor is
actually large in scale. She is not only helping to keep objects out of
landfills, and helping folks in our rural area have access to affordable
items for their homes and businesses, she also gives away all of the
proceeds, which have been substantial. Debbie works at the barn full-time,
and takes no compensation for her labor.
She has donated thousands of dollars to our local volunteer fire department,
and in 2021, was presented with a plaque and given an honorary membership in
the Orland Fire Department. She has helped us to purchase much-needed
forestry pumps, gear, and other equipment. And she flies a fire service flag
and banner at her donation barn to help raise awareness and foster respect
for volunteer fire service.
Debbie also donates a great deal of her time and money to the Cub Scouts,
where she is very active.
And she also quietly conducts other generous acts of volunteerism, such as
inviting adults with developmental or other disabilities living in assisted
living homes to come once a week on a "shopping" trip, where they get to
pick out anything they want for free from the barn. It's a delightful field
trip for these folks and puts many smiles on faces.
She has helped neighbors and community members who needed medical equipment
or modifications to their homes after surgery or illness. When a member of
the Penobscot Fire Department was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease-a
young man with three children-she raised and donated a significant amount of
funds to help him and his family during the long and difficult experience of
his care.
Debbie is always looking for ways to be of service. She does this quietly
and with diligence, and with no expectation of praise. We believe that she
is the exact kind of person that the Spirit of America Foundation is seeking
to honor."

To Whom It May Concern
I am strongly recommending the Manchester Lions Club for a Spirit of America Award in 2022. They do a myriad of important activities on an on-going basis and have added more during the last few years to provide hope and raise the spirits of the people of Manchester and surrounding communities during a difficult time of dealing with COVID and other related restrictions.
To list a few of their on-going activities, they have continued to (1) screen and assist kindergarten children with sight problems in the local school district; (2) collect, repair and distribute glasses, hearing aids and cell phones; and, (3) provide special recognition to honor community veterans and seniors by offering drive-thru suppers with available delivery service. Over the last few years, they have gone beyond any reasonable expectations by providing many more full-course and delicious take-out suppers (come rain, shine or snow!) on a regular basis. I cannot over emphasize the positive impact of this effort on local citizens. Additional special projects have included the installation and repair of a new lighted crosswalk between the Town Office and the Manchester Community Church and the delivery of Thanksgiving food baskets to families in need in the area.
It is my pleasure and honor to recommend the Manchester Lions Club for a Spirit of America Award.

2022 Second Winner’s Name :
Pat Amero
2022 Second Winner’s Address :
30 Berry Road, Monmouth, Maine 04259
2022 Second Winner’s Achievements :
Pat Amero
Pat Amero worked at Monmouth Academy for almost 53 years.
After she graduated from the Academy in 1960, the Academy trustees, who ran the school at that time, decided that the principal needed to have a secretary, and Pat was hired as MA’s first secretary.
She worked in the main office until 1966 when it became obvious that she was pregnant. She was told she would have to resign.
Then in 1975, when Rick, her first born, was in school and her second son Anthony was 4 years old, she returned to Monmouth Academy as the guidance secretary and served in this position until 2021 when she retired.
While working at MA she also was an advisor to the cheering team, the student office aides, an active member of the music boosters who organized and helped sell Birthday Calendars as a fund raiser and organized the annual Valentine Tea for senior citizens with the help of the student National Honor Society and other student volunteers.
Many Monmouth Academy students best remember her as the lady that you could go to talk to about any concerns and problems you were having, and she would always provide an understanding ear. Through the years she provided hundreds of students with a ready smile and kind and caring words and advice if they wanted it. They could depend on her as someone they could go to if help was needed. If they wanted to see the guidance counselor, she was the person who would make this possible. For faculty members she was the person to see if you wanted background information on students.
Some students used to ask her if she would come to an activity they were going to be participating in. She and her husband, Dick, drove many miles traveling to watch student events.
During her years serving students and faculty she went from using manual typewriters, to electric ones, to electronic, and then to computers. When she began, she used mimeograph machines and cut stencils to make copies and then used photocopiers.
She was the person who helped organized graduations and gathered and arranged all the awards and scholarship presentations. She made it so the annual senior graduation went like clockwork for everyone involved. She kept all the students’ confidential permanent records and report cards that teachers would use to put grades on and send home to parents.
Pat came to Monmouth at the tender age of 22 months and was raised by her grandmother, Elizabeth Hutchinson, on a farm on Main Street owned by Burt Robinson. She went to the Center School, and then to Monmouth Academy. She met her husband, Dick, at a dance hall in Litchfield called Purgatory while he was on leave from the Air Force. They were engaged before Dick was shipped off to Formosa (now called Taiwan). While he served the 19-month tour of duty she wrote to him every day. She has lived all her life in Monmouth, except for one year.
Dick and Pat were married on December 11, 1965, at Saint Francis Church in Winthrop. They raised two sons, Rick, a former MA teacher and principal and now Superintendent/Director of Waldo County Technical Center, and Anthony, a teacher and athletic administrator at Forest Hills Consolidated School in Jackman.
During her 52+ years at Monmouth Academy Pat served 8 principals and 13 superintendents. She said there was never a day when she didn’t look forward to going to work She says it has been an amazing life working with so many wonderful students and teachers. She misses them every day.
Now she stays busy helping at a local nursing home, antiquing, following MA and Forest Hills teams, and reading.
Pat Amero is another of the dedicated selfless people who serve our town and make it the fine place it is.

2022 Winner Name :
Stephen Foshay
2022 Winner Address :
1 Madison Ave Madison, ME 04950
2022 Winner Achievements :
This year the Madison Select Board is pleased to recognize Steve Foshay for his years of dedication to the community. Steve was born and raised in South Portland in the 1940’s. By 1965 his family had moved to Madison to start Foshay’s Market on Glendale Street. Local markets like Foshay’s, Veneziano’s, Ferris’ and Christophers thrived for many years.
Steve worked hard as a young man with jobs at Campbell’s True Value and Lessard’s IGA. He also worked as a maintenance man for the Town Office for several years. In the 1970’s and 80’s Steve was active with the Chamber of Commerce in Madison and Skowhegan and was an active member of the committees organized to celebrate ‘Father Rasle Days’.
When Madison did not have an active chamber or business alliance, Steve took it upon himself in 1990 to operate Foshay’s Information Booth near the Main Street intersection. People could stop and find out what’s going on in town from Steve and his many contacts around the state and community. In 2021, the Skowhegan Area Chamber of Commerce provided Steve with a brand new building to continue the information business.
Steve may best remembered for his five decade role as Santa to area children and families. Santa would come to town in a Christmas parade and for the past 30 years the information booth would be transformed into Santaville. Santa would brave the cold winter nights in December to bring a little Christmas joy to our community.
In 2021 Steve was recognized for 50 years of service as a Mason with Euclid Lodge 194 in Madison, highlighting his willingness to go the extra mile for the people of his community. Steve says Madison is special and the people here have always been good to him. Thank you Steve for your service to the community.

Spirit of America Foundation Nomination
From the Town of Hampden, ME
April 2022
Curtis D. Slininger
Outstanding community service and volunteerism defines the contributions that Curtis D. Slininger has given to the Town of Hampden, Maine. His involvement in multiple, diverse local organizations as both a member and a leader speaks volumes to his commitment to all citizens of Hampden, youth to senior.
Retiring from the U.S. Navy after a 27-year career, Curtis D. Slininger Curtis and his family moved to Hampden in 1995. He became a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and joined the Whitcomb-Baker VFW Post 4633, Hampden, becoming actively involved and was elected President in 2020. Under his guidance some of Post 4633 activities include recognition of first responders on the anniversary of 9/11, local flag retirement ceremony in conjunction with the Hampden Boy Scout troop, Memorial Day Parade, Children’s Day Parade, Little League, Mother’s Day and Veterans’ Day community breakfasts. Aligning with his military service he is also a member of DAV Chapter 6 and the Hampden American Legion.
The Hampden chapter of Kiwanis International is currently lead by Curt Slininger who has been president for the past several years. Under Curt’s tutelage the Hampden Kiwanis continue to sponsor the Key Club at Hampden Academy, are the Chartered Organization for Hampden Troop 41 (Scouts, BSA), offer monthly community bean suppers (pre-Covid), and actively participate in the Children’s Day Parade, as well as regional, national and international programs. Curt’s roles are as varied as the above activities indicate – all would agree that he is the chief bottle washer, chili maker and leader of an organization dedicated to the community and the children of Hampden.
Curt’s involvement in Hampden Troop 41, Boy Scouts of America, is multilevel. Commitments include: Chartered Organization Representative and a merit badge councilor in multiple areas, including Eagle merit badge requirements, with emphasis on responsible citizenship, character development and self-reliance. By modeling the above behaviors on a daily basis, Curt provides a strong example for troop members to emulate.
Curtis Slininger’s service to the Town of Hampden residents encapsulates the purpose of the Spirit of America Foundation Award.

Town of Hartland Spirit of America Award 2022
This year’s Spirit of America award is being presented to the Irving Tanning Community Center (ITCC) Board. This group of highly motivated people has provided the leadership necessary to ensure the Community Center’s success and growth. This success has been achieved with volunteered time from all the Board members.
The goal of the ITCC Board is to provide a safe place for a variety of activities. The ITCC has hosted business meetings, parties, educational events, showers, musical events, and celebrations of life. The Board is working diligently to make the ITCC facility financially stable and independent.
The sports programs that are conducted at the facility are second to none. Each year the soccer and basketball programs provide area youth with an incredible experience. They learn all about teamwork, supporting each other, and many other valuable life skills.
Due to the volunteerism of the Board Members of the ITCC, the facility will quickly become the hub of Hartland activities. The board is lead by Robin McNeil and Dot Humphrey who plan for community events and Shawn and Betsy Coots who plan the sports programs. The remaining Board members who volunteer provide positive direction, financial management, and support which is necessary to sustain the success of the ITCC’s goal of providing a safe gathering place for a variety of activities.
A sincere thank you to the ITCC Board Members for their volunteerism, hard work, and commitment to the Town of Hartland and the surrounding communities with regard to the ITCC facility.

2022 Winner Name :
Madison Moody
2022 Winner Address :
21 History Lane, Hollis ME 04042
2022 Winner Achievements :
Hollis’ individual Spirit of America Award for 2022 is awarded to Madison
Moody. Madison has been the Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation
Department for the past nine years. His active participation in many
programs sponsored by Hollis Rec has been instrumental in making them a
success.
One example of such success is our Town's Before and After School care
programs that Madison is responsible for. He also assumed responsibility
for last year's All Day Care program for school-aged children that involved
remote learning with the schools. It was a trying time for everyone
involved, but Madison always had a positive can-do attitude for the students
participating.
Madison's respectful interactions with the Town's children and staff for
which he is responsible for, is reflected in his willingness to meet with
children, parents, and staff when any issues related to programs arise. He
immediately addresses concerns while maintaining understanding and works
towards a fair resolution.
Madison also leads by example, expecting those who work with him to model
his approach and be kind, but firm with the children for whom they are
responsible. He is gentle and caring in his approach, but holds high
expectations of all children and counselors in the programs. He is patient
and understanding of issues that might impact performance, but expects to
see growth in everyone that he comes in contact with.
Madison has also recently taken over an active role as Chair of the Town's
Conservation Commission. It was in this role he was responsible for driving
the purchase of the "Tea House" property located next to the Town's Indian
Cellar Preserve. Purchase of the Tea House will only enhance the access and
enjoyment of this property for generations to come. Madison has also
actively participated in the Commission's trail maintenance, clean-up of the
town roadsides and creating ideas with other committee members to better the
environment around the Preserves. He is also helping the Conservation
Commission explore an open space plan for the community, which we expect to
be instrumental for the future of Hollis.
We appreciate Madison's exemplary service to our Town and the lives he
touched as a volunteer, a coach, a counselor, cooking luncheons for the
Town's Cribbage Group and as a mentor to the younger Hollis Rec staff.
Madison has been a very positive and integral part of the Hollis Rec family
and we are grateful for all he has shared with us. He will be transitioning
to a new role in a neighboring community this month. Although we will miss
him very much, we are confident he will shine just as brightly in his new
role, and we wish him the very best of success.

Town of Hollis Spirit of America Award
to the members of the adhoc Hollis Library
Committee who volunteered in June 2021 to participate in a project to
determine what our current Hollis libraries had to offer to the residents of
our community, what challenges that each faced, and what the library of the
future would need to be comprised of to meet the needs of the community.
A small group of Hollis residents including: Rebecca Bowley, Angela Mackie,
Susan Kimball, Doris Luther and Carla Baade Turner started meeting in June
2021 to review what information was available and met with the Hollis Fire
Chief, Americans with Disabilities staff, structural building engineers,
librarians and architects, to determine what residents had expressed that
the libraries needed, what additional upgrades needed to be done to be
compliant with Fire/Safety Codes, the strengths and weaknesses of each
library, and their recommendations going forward.
The group applied for a grant from the Narragansett Number One Foundation as
well as a matching Susan Collins Congressional Grant to hire an architect to
design and find the best location for a new library. The committee
originally wanted to hire a consultant but soon realized that they had
already investigated most of the items that would have been on a
consultant's list.
No research items were too small or menial for the committee to investigate.
They never gave up if someone didn't promptly respond back. We appreciate
the tenacity and organization of this special group of volunteers.
After collecting the data, visiting multiple libraries who had remodeled or
rebuilt, the committee provided the town with a document outlining their
results and a way to move forward towards new design. They accomplished all
their tasks to the Town in a succinct way that presented their ideas in an
organized and concise manner.
Please welcome me in congratulating volunteers Rebecca Bowley, Angela
Mackie, Susan Kimball, Doris Luther, and Carla Baade Turner in achieving
this high honor of a "Spirit of America" award.

Your Title :
Assistant to Town Manager
2022 Winner Name :
Mary Sweeney Underwood
2022 Winner Address :
10 Beehive Dr, Apt. 2, Gray, ME 04039
2022 Winner Achievements :
To hear Mary Sweeney Underwood explain it, she has not been a member of the
Gray Community for long; but her actions tell a different tale. Mary states
that she felt a need to become part of the community after moving here, and
her experiencing health issues that forced her to get outside and start
walking. In a short span of time, she has become known as the "Lady that
Walks" by many residents. Mary has shared her success with Nordic walking
poles with many and, through that community conversation, decided to create
an official program to assist others with walking using Nordic poles.
Working with the Recreation Director, Anthony Dahms, she created a walking
program that premiered in May. She worked with the Community Economic
Development Committee (CEDC) to create a fundraiser to raise the money to
purchase poles. Through the CEDC's birdhouse project, Mary, an artist,
volunteered to hand paint several bird houses to be sold at a local shop in
Gray (Local Centric). She is so dedicated to this program that she recently
secured transportation to Scarborough to take advantage of a big sale on
Nordic poles to jump start the program. Not only is Mary dedicated to this
program, but she also volunteers as a member of the Recreation Committee,
working to help with all recreational programming and representing senior
programming needs. She is a regular attendee of the monthly senior coffee
gatherings and recently assisted with creating Easter baskets to be donated
to the Local Food Pantry. Mary is a huge cheerleader for Gray. In her walks
around the Village, she enjoys checking out local businesses and sharing
their information on Community FB Pages. She recently collaborated with a
new Barber Shop to join in the Walking Program fundraiser. Mary picks up
trash every time she is out walking to help keep things beautiful and
encourages others to do the same. Even when Mary is not able to assist, she
will attend community events, like the Permablitz that helped create a new
pocket park in Gray village. She attends to lend support and engage with the
volunteers at the event. Mary's openness, empathy and enthusiasm has
literally and figuratively opened the door for many residents to become more
engaged in the community. Mary Sweeney Underwood embodies the true Spirit of America!
